I find something fascinating about human beings. We all seem to have this trait which drives us, this trait which keeps us constantly on our toes: we never seem to be satisfied. It seems like no matter how much we may have, no matter how fortunate we are, we are always searching for something more. A floor which we have cleaned needs to be cleaned again because it doesnt meet expectations, our house is too small for our liking, so we move to a bigger one, we have all the money we need, but we want more than we need, A private may want to become a general, an assistant manager may want to become a manager, and a guy from texas may want to become the president of the United States. Why is this? Something about constantly believing that we need to better our lot, that theres something more we could have. part of it I think is Western culture. The idea of having people with so much money who can buy anything they could conceive of and who live in mega-mansions. Because these people are a priveleged few compared to the rest of us, we automatically envy them. This envy translates into something, a drive, a need for more, a need to equal these wealthy individuals and to live up to our cultural expectations. Of course we could all be much worse off couldnt we...our families could fail and we could be tossed onto the streets. But that good old phrase from John Mayor "You dont know what you got ti'll its gone....They paved paradise to put up a parkin lot" Sorry I just had to finish that, so catchy eh? Me and my sister used to joke that he wasnt saying "parking lot" he was in fact saying "fuckin lot" LOLOL wouldnt that be better? Anywhooooo. Because we cant really, truly appreciate what we have because it never really enters our minds as anything special, just something we've known our whole lives, we look up in the world and lust for more. I think American Idol got more votes cast in it than the American Presidency did....tell you anything? People see these "Idols" and are instantly attracted to them, Why? Because it shows us the idea of ordinary people like you and me who just happen to have good singing voices and are given the chance to make it big in the world. We put ourselves in their position, we imagine that we are there winning fame and moola. We think that if they can do it then why cant we. They give us hope, the hope that one day we too could be sitting on that little golden pedestal to the adoration of hudreds of people and flow of money like we cant even count.
